From Wash Day to Day Five
“The pump on the conditioner is stiff for the first few uses, which annoyed me. Everything else won me over. My curls actually clump instead of frizzing out the second the humidity climbs.”

Good Hair Takes Its Time
Ichikami makes shampoo, conditioner, and treatments for hair that’s been over-promised to and under-served. The name means something close to “one hair” — the idea that hair is worth paying attention to strand by strand, not fixed in a single wash by whatever’s foaming hardest. We started because most haircare is built to feel dramatic in the shower and do very little by week three: heavy silicone that makes hair slick on Tuesday and limp by Friday, fragrance loud enough to cover the fact that nothing underneath is working. So we built ours the other way around — botanicals and rice-derived conditioning agents that do the slow, unglamorous work of leaving hair stronger than they found it.
That means our formulas aren’t designed to impress you in the first thirty seconds. Anyone can make hair feel soft immediately; coating it does that. Getting hair to actually behave — less breakage at the ends, less frizz on a humid morning, less of that dry snap when you’re brushing it out — takes ingredients that build up in the right way over weeks, and that’s harder to sell and slower to prove. We’ve reformulated products that tested beautifully on day one and did nothing by day thirty, because a shampoo that only works while you’re standing in the shower isn’t doing its job.
We’re not making this for people chasing the newest ingredient every season. We’re making it for the ones who wash their hair four times a week and have quietly given up on the idea that any of it changes much — who’d rather use one thing that works consistently than rotate through six that don’t. Ichikami is meant to be the bottle that’s still in your shower next year, doing the same thing it did last month. That’s less exciting than a transformation. It’s also the part that actually adds up.

Questions Before the First Wash
Rice-derived extracts, camellia oil, and other plant-based ingredients make up much of the base, chosen mainly for smoothing the cuticle and holding moisture in the strand. Rice bran and rice germ oil tend to soften coarse or dry hair, while lighter floral extracts are more often used in versions aimed at fine hair that flattens easily.
The formulas are generally mild enough for treated hair and are not designed to strip color, though any wash will gradually fade dye over time regardless of formula. For hair that’s been recently bleached or straightened, spacing out washes and using cooler water does more to preserve the result than the product choice alone.
A coin-sized amount is enough for most hair lengths, worked into the scalp first and then rinsed thoroughly before anything else is applied. Rinse-out treatments work best applied from mid-length to ends rather than at the roots, left for a minute or two, then rinsed until the water runs clear. Leaving residue behind is a common reason hair feels heavy afterward.
Each line targets a different concern rather than a different hair length. The moisture-focused versions lean richer and suit dry or frizz-prone hair, the smoothing versions are lighter and aimed at tangling or rough texture, and the volume-focused versions are built to avoid weighing down finer strands. Matching the line to the main concern usually matters more than matching it to hair length.
The scent is noticeable during use and usually softens to something faint within a few hours of drying. It tends to be described as floral and clean rather than heavy, though sensitivity varies, and anyone who reacts to fragrance in general may want to test a small amount before committing to a full routine.
Genuine imports carry Japanese-language packaging with a printed batch code, consistent bottle molding, and a properly sealed cap. Faded printing, mismatched fonts, or a scent that differs sharply from previous purchases are the usual warning signs. Buying through authorized sellers remains the most reliable safeguard, since counterfeits of popular imports circulate widely on resale platforms.
